TANZANIAN WOMAN WINS SDG AND HER AWARD AT UN HEADQUARTERS

A Tanzanian woman, Lucy Odiwa is among the Global winners of the SDGs&Her competition for women micro-entrepreneurs who are helping to achieve the SDGs.

The World Bank Group in partnership with UNDP, UN Women, The Wharton School’s Zicklin Center for Business Ethics Research, will hold an event on Monday the 24th of September in New York to award the 2018 winners of the SDGs&Her competition for women whose business help to achieve the global goals. Statement attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General on the elections in Mauritania

NEW YORK, September 5, 2018-The Secretary-General commends the people of Mauritania for the peaceful conduct of  parliamentary, regional and municipal elections in the country on 1 September, which saw broad participation of political parties.

He encourages all parties to continue to act in a peaceful manner during and after the announcement of the results. He further calls on political leaders and electoral contestants to resolve disputes through dialogue and in accordance with the law.

This Forum on China-Africa Cooperation is an embodiment of two major priorities of the United Nations: to pursue fair globalization and to promote development that leaves no one behind in the context of a rules-based system of international relations supported by strong multilateral institutions.

China has achieved remarkable development progress in recent years, with an unprecedented reduction in poverty, and I commend its commitment to sharing its successes through different initiatives and namely the Belt and Road.

Security Council Press Statement on Attack against Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Central African Republic

24 August 2018-The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the attack by armed elements against a convoy of the Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) which took place on 23 August 2018 in Pavika (prefecture of Basse-Kotto, in the south-east of the Central African Republic) and resulted in one Burundian peacekeeper killed. Security Council Press statement on the situation in Burundi

AUGUST 22, 2018-While the security situation in the country is generally calm, the members of Security Council reiterated their concern over the political situation in Burundi, the slow progress of the inter-Burundian dialogue led by the East African Community (EAC), and the lack of engagement by the Government of Burundi in that regard. They welcomed the announcement by President Nkurunziza that he will not seek another term in 2020, which is seen as a first step towards reducing political tensions and noted additional progress will be necessary for credible elections. Monday August 20, 2018-UN Staff around the world observed a moment of silence today in honor of Kofi Anan.

UN Flags were also flown half mast and a condolence book will be opened for people to provide their condolence messages.

Kofi Anan was the 7th UN secretary General.  He served for two terms from 1st January 1997 to December 2006.

The United Nations is mourning the death of former Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who passed away peacefully after a short illness, according to a statement published on his official Twitter account on Saturday, 18 August. The renowned Ghanaian diplomat was 80 years old.

Statement by Michael Møller, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, on the passing of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan

Geneva, 18 August 2018-Today is a sad day for the world.
Humanity lost its strong moral voice, and I lost my mentor, my role model and great friend.
Kofi Annan was an extraordinary political leader, but his major legacy is his humanity. It infused everything he did, every decision he made, and helped him restore the trust and enthusiasm in our great organization. He was an exceptional human being, with an amazing balance, infallible political instinct and ever-present compassion, always caring for others, particularly the less fortunate of us. Continue reading
