DAR ES SALAAM, March 8, 2018: Yong LI, Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) on Wednesday signed a joint declaration to strengthen the cooperation between the United Republic of Tanzania and UNIDO in building industry and infrastructure.
The declaration supports the implementation of the Country´s Development Vision 2025; the Zanzibar Vision 2020; the Sustainable Industrial Development Plan, and its Integrated Industrial Development Strategy 2025 (IIDS 2025).
During his two day visit, The Director General met with The Vice President, Samia Suluhu Hassan and three Ministers namely; Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr. Augustine Mahiga, Minister for Industry and Trade, Charles Mwijage, and Minister of Finance, Dr. Philip Mpango.
The Head of the UN’s Industrial Development body said, “I really would like to say one of the important events is the signing of the joint declaration on the intention to first of all contribute well into a programme for country partnership which is an innovative approach of UNIDO to implement the SDG 2030 agenda, particularly SDG goal 9 on inclusive sustainable industrialization and infrastructure innovation.”
Earlier, The DG met with the UN country team Heads of Agencies led by the United Nations Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Programme Representative, Alvaro Rodriguez. He also met with senior representatives of industries and the wider private sector in Tanzania.
“I believe this is a very useful visit for me to learn to know the country to know the country, to know their direction, to know their roadmap towards the industrializations process and the 2025 become a middle-income country by 2025.”
Tanzania has under the leadership of President John Pombe Magufuli, enhanced industrial development. A popular slogan, “Tanzania ya viwanda” has gained momentum as it goes to encourage Tanzanian’s to start up industries.
The Director General will visit Zanzibar on the 9th of March where he is expected to meet Dr. Ali Mohamed Shein, President of Zanzibar and other high-level dignitaries.
The Director General will be accompanied by ZOU Ciyong, Director of the Department of Programmes, Partnerships and Field Integration and Matilda Muweme, Africa Division Programme Officer, as well as Stephen Kargbo, UNIDO Representative in Tanzania.
The visit served as an opportunity for LI and his delegation to discuss the technical cooperation between Tanzania and UNIDO in the context of the Third Industrial Development Decade for Africa (IDDA III) following the adoption of the United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for the industrialization of Africa.
UNIDO is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. The mission of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), as described in the Lima Declaration adopted at the fifteenth session of the UNIDO General Conference in 2013, is to promote and accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) in Member States which is in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
